The best way to get rid of credit card or other debt is to pay down the debt with the highest annual percentage rate first. This means you should analyze your credit card debt not by which account has the largest balance due, but by which balance has the highest interest rate. When that most expensive debt is paid off, you can tackle the debt with the next-highest interest rate.
As you attack the high-interest debt, try to pay more than the minimum every month. Not only will you eliminate that debt sooner, you will save interest costs every month. Then, when that debt is paid off, do not begin to accumulate more charges in that account unless you can pay them off completely every month.
Remember that although the total amout that you owe is important, you can save money by being smart about how you pay off your debts. Put your available cash to work reducing your highest-interest debt first and you will save in the long run.
You may be tempted to try to pay off your smaller balace accounts first, to get them out of the way. True, that can give you a sense of accomplishment. Getting rid of the task of writing a few checks each month can be a tremendous psychologicval boost. But it does have a higher cost than getting the highest-interest rate debt paid off first. Realize the trade offs and decide what works best for you.
The important thing is to make a plan and stick to it. And do not be discouraged when a real emergency come along and knocks a hole in your plan. That hole can be temporary unless you let it overwhelm you.
